Throughout my sustained investigation I look to better understand and communicate my faith three-dimensionally. Inspired by artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Carravaggio and Michelangelo I asked: How does God manifest himself in the people around me (friends, family, teachers, and strangers)? How can the duplicity of human nature be captured through three-dimensional sculpture? How as a Catholic artist am I able to come to terms with human sin and the role humanity plays in the crucifixion of Christ?
My work draws on the imagery of Michelangelo’s Creation of Man, utilizing the motif of a hand to symbolize God’s presence in my relationships. I cast the hands of the people in my life, experimenting with different processes and materials. Expanding on those methods, I suspended hands from the ceiling around a centralized figure, visually depicting my faith and relationship to God and others. An abstract work on the ceiling and an Anselm Kiefer inspired painting on the opposite wall complement the installation and create a three-dimensional immersive viewing experience.
