My work reflects on the ways that the digital age has formed me as a person. Questions that guided my process are: What implications does technology pose to the psychological formation of its consumers? How does technology manipulate and/or oversaturate the true character of people and places? How has the digital age affected people’s habits? How do I view my own identity within a digital space? How can I use technology to create something emotionally stimulating and compelling? How, as a digital artist, can I ethically educate my audience about the effects of technological omnipresence?
Led by “how does technology manipulate the true character of people and place?,” I started by digitally distorting images from my childhood and began to illustrate the detrimental effects of omnipresent technology on the human experience. Realizing that static images did not do enough to convey my thesis, I ventured into video, experimenting with analog distortion through VHS, camcorders, and video switchers. Focusing on oversaturated depictions of daily life and nature, I was able to achieve my goal of creating something emotionally stimulating, reminiscent of the effect of the digital age.
